Food and Drink in Larissa
Unlike most pages that will give you a huge list of places to eat in Larissa, I am going to do something better.
I am going to provide you with a list that you can actually use.
Let's face it, Most of the time you don't need a listing of places to eat. You are on the beach and can smell the fish on the grill at a local tavern close by so you go there to eat. Or you are downtown walking past a burger joint and you enter to have a cheeseburger because you are American. Or you see the cute girl selling drinks at the bar and you walk in just to say "hi" because Ņ.well, never mind. Quite a lot of time your choices are made because you are hungry at that moment. You may for example have just finished playing around at Poker.dk with your friends or have just finished work and fancy a bite to eat. As we said it will be the initial sight or smell of a place that really draws you in.
This guide is about places that you must visit and are worth looking for. I will tell you where to go for local favorites like Tsipouro Mezedes, Kokoretsi or Patsa. You probably don't even know what those foods are, but you will want to try them because you will not be able to get food like that back in your country.
Every Food or Drink establishment listed here is here for a very good reason.
The Train Station

No, That is not the name of the restaurant. I am literally talking about the Larissa Train Station. Where the train stops. It is here that you will find "Patsa" Not pasta, "Patsa". Patsa is a meaty soup made from a cows stomach or cows feet or both. This is a very tasty dish. I realize that the description may not sound fantastic, But there is a reason why this dish is so popular among Greeks. It tastes great. In fact, the only reason why most tourists have never tried it, is because they don't like the description.
So give it a shot before you end up missing out on one of the most popular and traditional Greek dishes.
There are two Patsa restaurants outside the train station and one outside the downtown Bus station (Where you catch the bus to Athens). There are other Patsa restaurants in town, But these ones are the easiest to find.
O Vasilis

Psistaria "O Vasilis" is a meat lovers paradise. Here you will find meat slow roasted on a skewer. And you will also find a dish that is probably one of the best and most difficult to find greek dish around. It's "Kokoretsi". This is traditionally a dish served during the Greek Easter. It is basically the internal organs of a sheep, wrapped in intestines. Don't let the description turn you off. Greeks outside of Larissa wait a whole year to eat Kokoretsi. But in Larissa you can have it any day you want.
"Psistaria O Vasilis" is located near the center of town on a pedestrian walkway called "Panos street". This street is a very small but very famouse street and is known for the number of Psistaria Restaurants it has. In the photograph, Kokoretsi is on the top skewer. The bottom skewer has an entire roast lamb, And the two skewers in the middle have chickens and "Kondosouvli" which is pork tenderloin. By the way, "psistaria" is a category of restaurant. It's a place that has meat cooking on skewers.
There are other Kokoretsi places in Larissa, But the ones on Panos street are the easiest to find. Just go to the "Central Square" and ask for directions to Panos street.
Ladokola

Long ago, Most restaurants in Greece didn't use plates. Food was served on waxed paper sheets called "ladokola" At Ladokola, on Frourio hill, there is a restaurant that holds on to that tradition. There are no plates at Ladokola. The place is decorated with antiques and things that remind you of times long ago. The food is amazing, they specialize in Meat that is charbroiled to perfection. But the best thing about Ladokola is the atmosphere. It is difficult to feel self conscious about your looks, or about giving the right impression when you are eating with no plates. This is an experience that you must have.
Tiganakia

The word "Tiganakia" means "little frying pans". This restaurant has the appearance of a traditional Greek restaurant. It is located on Frourio Hill, around the corner from "Ladokola". Tiganakia is decorated with antiques also, It has a nice fireplace and an outdoor as well as an indoor area. Although all indications would lead you to believe that this is a traditional restaurant, you would only have to look at the menu to realize that this is the most unique restaurant in Larissa. Most of the food here is a creation of the chef. You can't find these foods anywhere else in the world. But at the same time, they are not very different from foods that we are very used to. In other words, you get the best of both worlds. You get to try something new, but you will swear you have had it before. Tiganakia is like Deyjavue (that feeling that you have done something before) for your taste buds.
Oh, I almost forgot, All the dishes have rather strange names. Names that have to do with sexual acts. I guess you can say that the food here is prepared with love, and named with lust.
Lukullus

Pay attention very closely, because I am going to give you directions to what I consider the best place to drink in Larissa. The place is called "Lukullus" and it's located on Manolaki street. It's about a one minute walk from the Central Square of Larissa, So go there and ask for directions.
What makes this place so great? Well, Imagine you are with your friends and you order a round of drinks. You get your drinks, and the table also fills up with food. You didn't order the food, it just showed up. Later you order another round of drinks. And more food shows up. You get one small plate of food with every drink you order, so if you have five people at the table, and you order a round of drinks, that is five plates of food, you order another round, now you got ten. The food is on the house, you don't order it, you are just pleasantly surprised when it arrives. Oh, there is one catch, the food only comes with Tsipouro, not with any other drink. There are two types to choose from. You need to ask for the one with "glikaniso", It tastes better. I always ad lots of ice to the tsipouro and a little bit of water. Sip it slowly and nibble on the food.
don't go there alone, the bigger the group, the more fun it is. And, just in case you are wondering, each Tsipouro costs about three and a half Euros. So Lukullus is also very economical. (serving food with tsipouro is very common in Larissa, But Lukulus is different because the amount and quality of food is above any other place I have been to)
Downtown (American Restaurant)

As soon as you walk into "Downtown", you feel as if you are no longer in Larissa. In fact you feel that you are no longer in Greece. You are transported as if by magic to North America. Even the menu has the traditional American items that you can't find any place else. And I don't mean stuff like starbucks coffee, I am talking real American favourites like Nachos with ground beef, jalapenos and cheddar served with real sour cream on the side. Also Buffalo wings, as well as the N.Y. Steaks and the baby back ribs with real BBQ Sauce.
This place is not easy to find. But it's located on Manolaki street close to "Lukullus" (see above). Directions would be more helpful than the address. To get there you would start from the central square of Larissa and walk to Manolakis street. Walk right past Lukullus tavern (see above). when you get to a little alleyway on the left side, you would have just found "Downtown, American Restaurant".
Panos street

I spoke earlier in the Kokoretsi section about Panos street. And since I am writing about special places, I have decided to include one dish that even Greeks have a problem with. Most people here will say, "I don't eat it". But some say, "I have had it once when I was young, But I won't do that again". But there is that rare group that says, "I like it".
I am talking about "head". It's the cheapest item on the menu, and it's available in any psistaria restaurant on Panos street and most other psistaria restaurants in Larissa. Give this dish a tast. (remember, psistaria is not the name of the restaurant, psistaria is a greek word for a restaurant that mainly has meat.
